Verizon and Centech unveil results of 5G Development Hub | Verizon

Verizon and Centech announced the results from the first cohort of the 5G Development Hub, launched in collaboration with Bell Canada. Haply Robotics was among the seven startups selected, using 5G's low latency and Mobile Edge Computing to enable near real-time control of robots with haptic feedback.

The 5G Development Hub

From Basking Ridge, NJ, Verizon and Centech announced the results from the first cohort of startups and scaleups in the 5G Development Hub, launched in collaboration with Bell Canada. Centech is a world-class business incubator and non-profit organization based in Montreal that supports innovative technology projects meeting the needs of industry, markets, and society. Launched in May 2022, the hub works to unlock innovation across industries including manufacturing, supply chain, transportation, smart cities, energy, and utilities.

The first cohort

Seven startups were selected to participate, working alongside Verizon network experts to create new 5G use cases and integrate 5G and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC)-enabled technologies into their services. The companies tested their solutions on Bell’s 5G network and mobile edge computing platform while benefiting from Centech’s mentoring in business development and growth strategies.

Jeff Frantz, Executive Director of Ecosystem Development at Verizon, said the programs “enable startups to test, explore and create the products and ecosystems of tomorrow.” Richard Chénier, General Director at Centech, called the first cohort a success, bringing together Canada’s booming startup ecosystem and the expertise of leading 5G and MEC providers.

Haply Robotics in the cohort

Haply Robotics develops 3D haptic controllers that replicate tactile sensory input, allowing users to interact with environments through a screen or VR headset. The announcement highlights three uses for the technology:

  • Control industrial robots
  • Support workforce training
  • Remotely supervise vehicles that interact with physical environments
